A mix of modern and old-school salsa, with plenty of trombones, and a couple of nice Puerto Rican touches like cuatro and plena beats, plus some rapping, reggae beats, and synthesizer washes. Boston-based Javier Arroyo has a high, nasal ‘sonero’ voice that reminds me of Angel Canales, Hector Lavoe, and especially Juan Luis Guerra. Mostly original material, lyrics about relationships, romance, Puerto Rico, you know, the usual; with some good arrangements (“El Chismoso” is hot). With pianists Usiel Colon, Tony Pérez, Israel Tannenbaum, percussionists Jesus Andujar, Jorge Najarro, Tito Ayala, Manolo Mairena, trombone player Albert Subero, Hommy Ramos and others. Recommended.
